LAVLE is designing and preparing prototype energy storage systems for its large-scale lithium metal battery (LMB) and solid-electrolyte battery (SEB)-based energy storage systems utilizing cells developed and provided by 3DOM. These cells offer energy density that is more than double that of the most energy dense lithium-ion batteries on the market, and closer to triple that of most lithium-ion batteries.
Using lithium metal as a battery anode has been referred to as the ‘Holy Grail’ of battery technology, providing benefits far surpassing that of solid electrolytes alone and producing more than double the energy density compared to other lithium-ion batteries available today. LAVLE has this technology, and large format cells with these characteristics are already operating in 3DOM and LAVLE labs.
LAVLE and 3DOM are offering both solid electrolyte solutions, as well as lithium metal anode solutions without solid electrolyte to optimize for applications. These cells incorporate 3DOM’s separator technology, which not only facilitates LMB and SEB battery functionality, but also allows these batteries to exhibit safety levels that greatly exceed current state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries. LAVLE’s SEB and LMB technologies have already achieved energy density of 420 Wh/kg in full size large format cells—more than double that of traditional lithium-ion batteries. The lower operating temperatures of LAVLE’s LMB and SEB at 25 degrees Centigrade ambient temperature deliver the safety characteristics necessary for broad commercial application, compared to competing solutions requiring elevated temperatures.
